Travels
Our route.
The hamlet of Pangnirtung is situated on a coastal plain along Pangnirtung Fjord on Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada. The Inuit and their ancestors have inhabited the area for thousands of years.
Icebergs in the fjord already beginning to show the effects of climate change.
One hour by boat from Pangnirtung is Auyuittuq National Park. Just past the park entrance, trekkers are met with a giant Inukshuk—a stone sculpture used by the Inuit for centuries as the first GPS system in the North. Inukshuks provide hunting and navigation aids across large stretches of land.
One missed step and you were gone.
On the last day, taking a much-needed rest till the final push.
Fishing is the mainstay of the way of life and boats are the main source of transportation.
Part of the travelling group: Maurice Strong, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and the first Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme; and his wife, Hanne Strong.
Starting into a week's backpacking trek through Auyuittuq National Park with friends and guides, where we will pass a sign marking the entry into the Arctic Circle and almost 24-hour summer sunlight.
Difficult terrain in many places.
Every night trying to dry clothes on a makeshift line.
